Wind generator repair and maintenance chemicals

Gearboxes, gears, and bearings are the primary moving parts that negatively impact up time and revenues. Ecolink Inc. supplies a variety of industrial solvents and industrial cleaners to thousands of wind power turbines. With more than 30,000 megawatts under contract for industrial degreasers, including Next Era Energy and FPL Wind, we know how to get the job done with the least amount of cleaning chemicals and labor resulting in shorter maintenance intervals. We are also well versed with the complicated regulations including CARB and the various Air Quality Management Districts (AQMD) in California. In 2008, we partnered with FPL Wind at the Altamont Pass with over 6,000 turbines.

Brake and choke cleaners are common wind generator repair and maintenance chemicals. The problems using this category of cleaner degreaser:

  1. Cheap ($3/can) – the can without any contents is $2 so less than 1/3 of the actual can contains product used for cleaning. This shortcut cost one wind power company more than $90,000 year in excess shipping, can puncturing, disposal, material handling, and inventory management.
  2. Ultra-flammable – as regulations affecting VOC content become stricter, the percentage of the exempt compound, Acetone, increases; resulting in a more flammable and less effective cleaner. Remember acetone is commonly used for nail polish removal. Less than 20°F is a significant risk, particularly in a shop environment where there is welding and energized equipment.
  3. Poor cleaning – a combination of inexpensive packaging and high ratio of acetone cause this product to dry too fast and not have enough solvency to remove difficult soils – greases, oils,
  4. Paperwork – the more flammables a facility inventories and uses creates a significant paper trail that results in higher inbound freight costs and outbound disposal costs. In states such as California that enforce universal waste law, each aerosol can must be punctured before disposal or recycling. This is a considerable expense of labor hours and increases the probability for an unscheduled visit from EPA and/or OSHA auditors.

Solution:

Ecolink 3005 and  Positron (solvent) and S-34 NG (aqueous) – any of these three will get the job done in the field or in the shop. FREE samples are available and all aerosol cans are filled to minimize propellant or water where applicable in solvent vs. aqueous formulations.
