Sophie’s Internship Experience

Introduction to Sophie

Hi there! My name is Sophie, and I am a college junior majoring in Biochemistry. During my sophomore year, I had been hoping to find an internship for the following summer, so I was overjoyed when I was hired as one of Ecolink’s SEO Writing Interns.

This internship definitely met my expectations of what a remote summer internship would involve. My main task was to write blog posts based on certain keywords and try to reach a high keyword density. As someone who did not have previous experience in digital marketing, this was a new concept to me, but I enjoyed learning about it! In addition, my chemistry background aided me in writing about some of the assigned topics, such as solvents and extractions. I think having a basic understanding of the topic before I began researching helped me to craft more concise blog posts.

Communication is a must!

I would guess that one of the biggest worries on most students’ minds when starting a remote internship would be experiencing a lack of communication. Fortunately, this was not an issue for me. Our supervisor Carolyn made herself very available through texting and Microsoft Teams and always answered my questions. She encouraged us to reach out to her if we were ever confused about anything, which I really appreciated.

Favorite Part of the Internship

My favorite part of the internship was writing descriptions for the products that are going to be sold on Ecolink’s new website, Tidal Washers. I used the descriptions provided by our chemical manufacturing company to write my own descriptions, each of which included a summary of the product, its benefits, and how to use it. I also synthesized some information from the products’ Safety Data Sheets to write these pieces, which is another area in which my chemistry background was helpful.

In conclusion, I am grateful that I was one of the students selected for Ecolink’s internship program. I feel like I contributed to their growth and development as a company throughout the summer, which made it a rewarding experience. I would recommend this internship to anyone interested in the fields of chemistry, science communication, business, digital marketing, or any combination of the above!

Did the Internship Meet My Expectations?

The Ecolink internship did meet my expectations! I was a little nervous at first because it was my first internship and I wanted to do well, and it was incredibly helpful that everyone was very nice, understanding, and supportive. I also found that I learned many things about myself and also about the skills I needed to succeed in the workplace in the future.

Learning Experience

I would definitely say that the internship was a big learning experience for me. I learned about Search Engine Optimization and also about Google Analytics. Both of those are important to understand regardless of what writing field you go into. I also learned how to set goals for myself and how to keep a timesheet that didn’t involve punching in and punching out every day for a scheduled amount of time. I learned more about how to research keywords and how to properly format a blog post!

Changes

The Ecolink internship was fun and a learning experience and there is very little I would change. The Teams meetings were helpful and the messaging on Teams also helped me contact someone quickly and reply quickly about any questions.

If I were to make a change, I would probably make a general sheet that was separate from the rolling agenda to put general information on. It would include things like assignment days and due-days for blogs, directions on how to read an assignment spreadsheet, and various Q and A material. This would help people who forgot things that were gone over verbally or who absorbed information better in a written format. It would also be a handy thing to check back on so fewer questions would have to be sent and answered.

Favorite Parts

My favorite part of the internship was probably researching eco-friendly topics. I am an ecologically conscious person and so finding solutions to problems or highlighting safer alternatives to traditional practices made me feel like I was making a difference in informing others. I also liked learning about plant extraction. I have long loved plants and I grow my own herbs and teas so learning more about how oils are made and plant extracts come about was exciting to me!

I had a lot of fun learning about the uses of chemicals and growing professionally during this internship. I feel better equipped for the job market and I also feel like I know myself better regarding how I function best and what my needs are, and I can apply that knowledge to improving both my writing and myself!

Melody’s Internship Experience

Who Am I?

My name is Melody Weckel Confer. I was a Digital Marketing Intern with Ecolink Inc. during the Summer of 2018. This was my first internship and Ecolink was the ideal company to work for. My director supervisors and my intern co-workers were extremely helpful and collaborative. I have gone on to recommend this opportunity to others at my college and in the Atlanta area.

What I Did I Do?

Ecolink gave me valuable experience that allowed me to obtain two subsequent marketing internships, one with the Professional Photographers of America, and one with the Piedmont National Corporation. As an English major, I love the opportunity to write 23 blog articles for the company’s e-commerce website and complete independent research into the company’s new product line. I learned how to use platforms that would benefit me in future roles, like WordPress, Hootesuite, and Canva. I also worked with my intern co-workers to develop a social media campaign derived from the company’s core cultural values.

Where Am I Now?

Ecolink gave me the valuable opportunity to gain experience in an office environment and get to know the world of digital marketing. I’ve since graduated from Oglethorpe University in May 2020 with a degree in English Literature, and a minor in Writing. I currently hold a part-time Marketing Content Writer position with Piedmont National, which wouldn’t have been possible without interning at Ecolink.

Suraj’s Internship Experience

I definitely feel that my Digital Marketing Internship met my expectations. I was able to do everything that the description on Chegg detailed and more, all the while learning beneficial information on SEO and various e-commerce practices which I definitely see myself applying in the near future. This internship is all I could have asked for and more; I wouldn’t change anything about it if I were to manage it. Furthermore, I never found myself hesitating to ask Ms. Federhofer whenever I had questions or concerns, as she is very approachable. She was also very understanding as well, since she would be able to accommodate my hectic schedule when organizing meetings or delegating tasks. Right off the bat, the company’s goals and objectives were crystal-clear, which enabled me to go about completing assignments in a way that would represent the company’s best interest in the following weeks.

My Favorite & Least Favorite Parts of the Internship

My favorite part of the internship has to be the keyword research assignment, because it enabled me to unleash my creativity while learning a thing or two about how to assume the customer’s perspective. My least favorite part is probably writing the blogs on chemical products; I am usually fine with writing blogs, but it was very tedious since I don’t have much experience with chemistry. I definitely would recommend this internship to a friend, especially someone who is interested in the business or data science field. Through my weeks of work, I feel that I provided a fresh new perspective on how the company should go about rebranding itself, whether it be from the manner in which I wrote blogs or the content I created.

Mohammed’s Internship Experience

Clicking that link and filling out that form was nerve-wracking; it’s scary thinking you’re unqualified or not good enough, but I’m glad I went through it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be writing this blog. I had recently gotten out of a bad internship, and I was happy I did because I would’ve never found EcoLink had I stayed at the other internship.

This was a pivotal experience in my life; it was both fun and educational, and, in my experience, you don’t hear very that often. I had never specifically done digital marketing; some minimal advertising at my previous internships, but I’d learned a few key concepts that would help if I were to create my own business or startup.

The internship was conducted efficiently and quickly – we completed the full 8 weeks with perfect timing. Some hiccups came up here and there, such as weekly team meetings getting delayed, but I didn’t mind; it was more time for work I needed to catch up on. I wouldn’t change anything about the actual experience itself, but a few things we were working on, such as the Internship Portal, could have been better.

Carolyn, my boss, was helpful and always there on time for business days. Any time I had a question I didn’t feel apprehensive or nervous about emailing her and her fast response time was incredible. The company had changed its structure recently; they had switched from storing/selling chemicals to drop shipping them, and Carolyn explained all these changes clearly and concisely so I never felt confused about the work I was given.

EcoLink, and, more precisely, Carolyn went out of their way to inform the interns about the specifications of the company. The experiences EcoLink had gone through were unique, changing from a more physical aspect to digitizing and automating a lot of the process, even allowing some of us to work remotely!

My favorite part of the internship would be all the blog posts. Although I’m a computer science/software engineering student, I’ve always had a passion for writing. I think of it as a great way to express your ideas and let them run free, and I’m also a quick learner so the blog posts brought the best of both worlds together. I would research many topics (for example surfactants) and learn all about them. If you like learning new, cool things, you won’t be disappointed with interning at EcoLink.

This internship definitely isn’t for everyone, but if you like advertising and would consider yourself outgoing, you will thrive. You certainly won’t be hurt by applying, so it’s always worth a shot. If I could change anything about the internship, I’d like for the meetings to start earlier, and on a different day, but that’s mostly just because I am on EST and we has interns in CST & PT. Other than the meetings, you are able to work on your own schedule; just don’t forget to list your hours on your timesheet!

All in all, my time at EcoLink wasn’t something I can describe in just one word, but it was incredibly positive, and EcoLink and I both gained something from each other. The company got help in preparing their new website bulkchemicals2go.com, and I gained a new perspective on how the internet works.
