What Does ACS Grade Mean?

If you are looking into high purity chemicals you have probably wondered, what does ACS grade mean? The ACS or American Chemical Society sets purity standards for chemicals and solvents, requiring the highest grade chemicals to be at least 95% pure. To say that a chemical is ACS grade means that it meets this high standard where the level of purity is equal to or greater than 95%. This high grade of chemical is also known as a reagent and is required for most medical or pharmaceutical purposes. One product that requires ACS grade chemicals for production is hand sanitizer. In light of the coronavirus pandemic, many manufacturers have turned to produce hand sanitizers to increase availability and stock. The FDA and WHO have set formula guidelines for hand sanitizer manufacturers to follow when producing hand sanitizer for resale. One requirement is high purity or ACS grade alcohol in addition to Glycerine 99.7%.

What products and processes require ACS grade chemicals and solvents?

  • Cosmetics
  • Tooth Paste
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Mouthwash
  • Antiseptic First Aid Spray
  • Experimentation That Involves Biological Matter

What does ACS grade mean, and where can it be purchased?

Simply put, ACS grade chemicals meet or exceed the standard set by the American Chemical Society, to be at least 95% pure.  By being equal to or greater than 95% pure, this means these chemicals contain 5% or less of organic impurities that make the chemicals unstable or unsuitable for medical and pharmaceutical use. If you are looking to purchase ACS grade chemicals like IPA, hydrogen peroxide, glycerine, or other chemical solvents, Ecolink can help.
