Cleaning Electrical Contacts: 5 Tips for Effective Maintenance

Electrical contacts are important circuit components found in machines and electrical equipment that are made from conductive materials. When two contacts touch, they are capable of transferring electricity between electrical apparatuses. Without them, machines will completely shut down. It is essential to clean these contacts, as improperly maintained ones can cause the systems to operate less effectively. Today, we will explain how to clean these contacts and suggest some Ecolink products you can use to get the job done.

Recommendations for Cleaning Electrical Contacts

One of the best pieces of advice we can give you about cleaning contacts is to choose the proper cleaning solution. Certain solutions have desirable qualities that can help protect workers or machinery. Several of these qualities include:

  1. Dielectric formulation to obstruct the flow of electricity
  2. High flash point or no flash point to reduce the possibility of a fire
  3. Quick evaporation time to assist in protecting metal from corrosion
  4. No residue to not attract more dirt and grime to recently cleaned equipment
  5. Non-corrosive properties to again protective the surrounding metal surfaces

It is also recommended that manufacturers and maintenance workers use cleaners that do not contain hazardous air pollutants or volatile organic compounds. And wear personal protective equipment so they can better protect themselves during the cleaning process.

Products You Can Use from Ecolink

Ecolink has a variety of contact cleaning solutions available in our shop. Two products that we recommend you use on electrical contacts and a small description of them include:

  • ECC (A): ECC is an effective environmentally preferred aerosol contact cleaner that does not contain alcohol, propane, butane, and chlorinated solvents. The odorless aerosol has an extremely quick evaporation rate that leaves no residue behind. You can use ECC on non-energized equipment and metals safely. Be aware though that this cleaner is highly flammable, so make sure to keep it away from ignition sources.
  • Electron: Electron is a parts-washing solvent and degreaser formulated without chlorinated solvents or other hazardous chemicals. This mixture is created with a unique high-grade oil distillate that allows it to safely remove carbon and organic resins from different types of electrical equipment. Electron has an incredibly high flash point and leave no residue on surfaces.
