Water displacing oils are not required for outstanding lubricity and corrosion protection.  Instead, after water evaporation, an extremely thin waxy film allows parts to be processed without pre-drying. However, some care should be exercised, however, to prevent too great a carry over of water which would, in time, dilute the wax emulsion resulting in a thinner deposit with lower protective quality. Products are normally used as received but may be diluted with water, in special applications. Water emulsifiable coating will air-dry in a relatively short time and can be shortened by force drying with warm air or in heated spin dryers. To remove coating or if it becomes necessary to reprocess the parts, the coating may be removed in a hot alkaline cleaner or vapor degreaser. * Do not allow bath temperature to exceed 130°F.

Beyond the density and polarity of methylene chloride (dichloromethane, CAS 75-09-2), there are many regulatory advantages of switching to mildly acidic liquid concentrates, such as benzyl alcohol, to remove tenacious polymeric coatings including epoxy paints and polysulfide base coats from ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

CARC Removal

For paint stripping of four different CARC systems: MIL-P-46168, MIL-P-53039, and MIL-P-64159 Type I and Type II from both aluminum and steel substrates, environmentally acceptable paint removers, which are primarily benzyl alcohol based, can strip CARC in 20-120 minutes and are approved per Technical Order (TO) 1-1-8 section II (2) and GRUMMAN AEROSPACE GS115UT1. Our heavy duty industrial paint stripper replaces Oakite Gardostrip Q7900 and CEE-BEE E-1058 (NSN 8010-01-369-2646). These fast, safe, and effective paint strippers do not contain any hazardous solvents.  Run at 50% concentrate, benzyl alcohol can strip steel and aluminum in same bath as long as steel goes thru immersion rinse and inhibit prior to spraying off residual coating.

USE PROCEDURES

Paint Removal

The surface to be stripped should be thoroughly clean and free from water.

  1. Spray on a light coat of stripper using a high pressure 10:1 air activated pump equipped with a 1/2″ I.D. high pressure hose and spray wand with a fan type spray nozzle.
  2. It is important to use the correct type of spray nozzle for this application. Contact manufacturer to confirm fan-type.
  3. Keep the surface wet with stripper until the paint buckles.
  4. When the paint is lifted (one hour to overnight for tough coatings), brush the surface thoroughly to remove the loosened paint.
  5. Reapply stripper as required to loosen any remaining paint.
  6. When all of the paint has been lifted, use a brush or squeegee to remove the loosened paint and residual stripper.
  7. Thoroughly rinse the surface with high pressure water.

Sealant Removal

  1. The surface must be thoroughly clean and free from water.
  2. Apply stripper with a brush and allow to dwell until the sealant is penetrated and dissolved. Apply additional stripper if required to keep the surface wet.
  3. When the sealant is dissolved, remove with a suitable scraper that will not scratch the surface. Reapply benzyl alcohol-based stripper to any spots of sealant not readily removed with the scraper.
  4. When removal is complete, thoroughly rinse the surface with a water spray or wipe clean with cloths wet with water.

Vertre™l MCA Degreasing solvent for precision cleaning of small intricate metal and non-metal parts e.g. fuel injectors, or dental implants to remove minor oils, grease, finger-prints and particulate matter.  Unlike aqueous cleaning, solvent cleaning will not leave a residue on the surface being cleaned.  This is a critical requirement in some process specs for aerospace etc.  Oxygen Cleaning is critical application where MCA is used to remove minor hydrocarbon oils followed by 3M™ Novec™ HFE-7100 as a final rinse to remove the MCA (which has trans-dichloroethylene) All light-weight hydrocarbon oils  such as engine fluids, brake fluids, hydraulic fluids etc. as well as finger-print and sub-micron particles.  This kind of cleaning is done in clean-rooms by hand- wipe using lint-free engineered wipes, cold-rinse, spray & dry or vapor-degreasing. AK-225 and other hydrocarbon (flammable) solvents such as OMS, other mineral spirits, toluene etc.
Vertrel™ SDG Similar to MCA applications, except since Vertrel™ SDG has a large amount of trans-dichloroethylene it is more aggressive on the parts and will attack plastics and elastomers but will remove heavier oils & greases and even waxes.  It is used mainly to clean small precision engineered metal parts, e.g. tiny ball-bearings or wax residues from glass. All of the above + heavier oils , greases and waxes. (SDG has a higher Kb value than MCA) ALL non-alcohol npb formulations (Ensolv etc.) as well as aqueous detergent cleaners.  The npb formulations have a health issue and are very aggressive on plastics. The aqueous detergents will always leave a soap-scum residue behind unless rinsed multiple times.  Hence these solvents although expensive may be more cost-effective since they clean the part in 1-step vs. longer and multi-step aqueous cleaning cycles.
Vertrel™ SMT Defluxing solvent used mainly to remove solder flux after solder reflow step.  Electronic assemblies being cleaned are intricate and have non-metal components so the solvent has to be compatible with plastics, elastomers etc. Flux residues (resins either plant based or synthetic.  Also, since there are other metallic contaminants from the solder metals, the alcohol in the Vertrel™ SMT provides a polarity to remove ionic impurities. All solvent flux removers.
Vertrel™ SFR Same as Vertrel SMT™ applications except more aggressive since it has a large amount of trans-dichloroethylene used to clean mainly metal assemblies.  Plastic components would be damaged by this solvent. Same as above (SFR has a higher Kb value than SMT) All npb and AK-225 formulations with alcohol.
