Wind Power 2010 in Texas – Less than 30 Days Away

Some of the over 6,000 wind turbines at Altamo...

Wind generator repair and maintenance chemicals

Gearboxes, gears, and bearings are the primary moving parts that negatively impact up time and revenues. Ecolink Inc. supplies a variety of industrial solvents and industrial cleaners to thousands of wind power turbines. With more than 30,000 megawatts under contract for industrial degreasers, including Next Era Energy and FPL Wind, we know how to get the job done with the least amount of cleaning chemicals and labor resulting in shorter maintenance intervals. We are also well versed with the complicated regulations including CARB and the various Air Quality Management Districts (AQMD) in California. In 2008, we partnered with FPL Wind at the Altamont Pass with over 6,000 turbines.

Brake and choke cleaners are common wind generator repair and maintenance chemicals. The problems using this category of cleaner degreaser:

  1. Cheap ($3/can) – the can without any contents is $2 so less than 1/3 of the actual can contains product used for cleaning. This shortcut cost one wind power company more than $90,000 year in excess shipping, can puncturing, disposal, material handling, and inventory management.
  2. Ultra-flammable – as regulations affecting VOC content become stricter, the percentage of the exempt compound, Acetone, increases; resulting in a more flammable and less effective cleaner. Remember acetone is commonly used for nail polish removal. Less than 20°F is a significant risk, particularly in a shop environment where there is welding and energized equipment.
  3. Poor cleaning – a combination of inexpensive packaging and high ratio of acetone cause this product to dry too fast and not have enough solvency to remove difficult soils – greases, oils,
  4. Paperwork – the more flammables a facility inventories and uses creates a significant paper trail that results in higher inbound freight costs and outbound disposal costs. In states such as California that enforce universal waste law, each aerosol can must be punctured before disposal or recycling. This is a considerable expense of labor hours and increases the probability for an unscheduled visit from EPA and/or OSHA auditors.

Solution:

Ecolink 3005 and  Positron (solvent) and S-34 NG (aqueous) – any of these three will get the job done in the field or in the shop. FREE samples are available and all aerosol cans are filled to minimize propellant or water where applicable in solvent vs. aqueous formulations.

Nonflammable Degreasers for Imperial Electric Motors

Imperial Electric Motors – Protecting Your Investment

The best way to maximize your Imperial Electric Motor investment is through proper operations and maintenance. Friction is the enemy of all moving pieces, especially metal-on-metal contact. Elevators and escalators are extremely sensitive to surface wear and represent a potential liability if not properly maintained. The challenge is the ongoing changes to the types of cleaning solvents can be used. Operating in California is a different level of rules and compliance regulations than any other state. So how do you protect your investment while also adhering to the latest round of EPA and OSHA regulation standards?

Nonflammable degreasers are ideal for the following reasons:

  • mitigate risk of fire when working around energized equipment
  • less expensive to ship and dispose of the unused contents
  • generally dry or evaporate much more quickly which protects
  • from non-volatile residue (NVR)

Ecolink 3005 aerosol and Triagen aerosols are ideal solutions depending on the soil density and age of the soils, i.e. time elapsed between maintenance intervals. Ecolink 3005 works better for lighter soils and Triagen is ideal for true metal degreasing where VOC’s are not an issue – i.e. California. Both solutions ‘significantly’ out-perform LPS Labs Electro Contact Cleaner. With 35-55% propellant (air), Electro Contact Cleaner is an embarrassment to the chemical industry. Read their MSDS and give us a call to evaluate a product that works and lasts 1-3 times longer than Electro Contact Cleaner.

About Imperial Electric

Imperial Electric is a custom manufacturer of special application AC and DC motor systems (motors and drives; motors and generators; motors and gearboxes) for the floor care, elevator/escalator, and hose reel markets. With more than 100 years of experience in electrodynamic devices, Imperial Electric is the industry’s best choice to keep products in motion and performing to specification. Imperial’s complete line of products include permanent magnet motors, gear motors, AC and DC elevator motors, AC induction motors, generator sets, vacuum motors, transaxles, wheel drives, gear boxes, special reducers, and gearing.

Removing Carbon Deposits from Stator Bars, Stator Motors

Stator bar insulation failures

Stator bar insulation failures often occur as a result of carbon deposits. If a failure occurs while in service it can cause extensive collateral damage to the generator stator core and field, which can extend a forced outage several months. The severe impact of a winding or stator insulation failure on generator availability demonstrates the importance of a thorough, routine leak testing and repair plan. Removing carbon deposits is a bigger job than can be handled by conventional contact cleaners and rags. Industrial degreasers such as Ecolink’s flagship products, Electron and Positron, have been in use for this very application for over 20 years. Approved and in use by Siemens, General Electric and Alstom, these solvent degreasers deliver incredible cleaning performance while also easy to work with including high flash point (above 140°F), high dielectric strength (46,000 volts) and no surface leakage of current in immediate residue tests. More importantly they are very cost-effective saving money on inbound shipping, freight and outbound disposal costs.

Stator Rewinds

Typical field service scope for a stator rewind installation will include:

  1. Stator core preparation, including cleaning, repairs to interlaminar insulation, testing and re-painting. (Some scopes may include a core restack. In other cases, age of the unit or testing results may indicate problems requiring a core replacement.)
  2. Installation of upgraded end winding support system (Certain fossil units).
  3. Installation of new surge and bus rings ( may include provisions for a future Main-Neutral Interchange).
  4. Installation of stator bars, RTDs and wedging and blocking system and testing of individual coils or groups of coils at specified points in the installation.
  5. Brazing and circuit connections
  6. Testing of the completed winding
  7. Painting and miscellaneous finishing details
