Description

Tetrahydrofuran (THF) - 55 Gallon Drum

Tetrahydrofuran is a high-purity, organic, research grade solvent.  A related compound to tetrahydrofuran is Diethyl ether, its more volatile counterpart.  Tetrahydrofuran is known by other names such as diethylene oxide, tetramethylene oxide, THF, and oxa cyclopentane.  THF serves to dissolve or form solutions with other organic compounds.  It is also the solvent of choice in making PVC.  THF is also used as a monomer, or a solvent for natural and synthetic resins.

Tetrahyrdofuran Benefits:

  • Nontoxic and organic
  • Low Viscosity
  • Aids in the production of renewable platform chemicals and sugars
  • Median lethal dose
  • Versatile solvent

Tetrahydrofuran Applications:

  • Tetrahydrofuran may be used to dissolve polymers along with other forms of plastic.
  • THF is also used as a solvent in 3D printing as a cleaner and a finisher on products.
  • THF is an industrial solvent for polyvinyl chloride in varnishes.
  • Main application is as an industrial solvent for PVC and in varnishes.
  • THF may be turned into PTMEG once exposed to a strong acid which is used in the production of spandex.

FAQ

What is the CAS-no. and formula of Tetrahydrofuran?
Tetrahydrofuran has the CAS No. 109-99-9 and the chemical formula C4H8O.
What are the synonyms, physical, and chemical properties of Tetrahydrofuran?
Tetrahydrofuran, also known as THF, is a clear, colorless liquid with an ethereal odor. It is highly flammable with a very low flash point of approximately 6°F and a boiling point near 149°F. The product has a high evaporation rate, low viscosity, and forms explosive vapor-air mixtures. It can form peroxides during storage and is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents.
What safety precautions should be taken when handling Tetrahydrofuran?
Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames, and ignition sources. Avoid breathing vapors and avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing, eye protection, and respiratory protection as required. Ground and bond containers during transfer to prevent static discharge. Do not eat, drink, or smoke when handling, and store containers tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated area.
What are the appropriate engineering controls for Tetrahydrofuran?
Use effective general and local exhaust ventilation to maintain vapor concentrations below occupational exposure limits. Use explosion-proof electrical and ventilation equipment in areas where vapors may be present. Ground and bond all containers and transfer equipment. Emergency eyewash stations and safety showers should be available in handling areas.
