Description: Tetrahydrofuran is a high-purity, organic, research grade solvent. A related compound to tetrahydrofuran is Diethyl ether, its more volatile counterpart. Tetrahydrofuran is known by other names such as diethylene oxide, tetramethylene oxide, THF, and oxa cyclopentane. THF serves to dissolve or form solutions with other organic compounds. It is also the solvent of choice in making PVC. THF is also used as a monomer, or a solvent for natural and synthetic resins.
Benefits
- Nontoxic and organic
- Low Viscosity
- Aids in the production of renewable platform chemicals and sugars
- Median lethal dose
- Versatile solvent
Applications
Tetrahydrofuran may be used to dissolve polymers along with other forms of plastic. THF is also used as a solvent in 3D printing as a cleaner and a finisher on products. THF is an industrial solvent for polyvinyl chloride in varnishes. Main application is as an industrial solvent for PVC and in varnishes. THF may be turned into PTMEG once exposed to a strong acid which is used in the production of spandex.
