What is S-34?

S-34 is a water based cleaner and degreaser that removes grease, oils, wax, carbons and inks from virtually any surface. It has a convenient spray and wipe blend allowing for no mixing or rinsing. S-34 can be used on equipment, fixtures, walls, floors and any other surface not harmed by water. It also contains a sophisticated rust and corrosion inhibitor package, making it an ideal cleaner for unpainted metal surfaces.

Benefits of S-34:

  • Residue free
  • Non-corrosive
  • Non-flammable
  • Biodegradable
  • Ideal for metal surfaces

Maintenance of Power Transformers

The use of a soy-based natural ester insulating liquid, such as Envirotemp FR3 Fluid, has progressed over the years. It has proved excellent performance in distribution transformers reaching a voltage and power of up to 420 kV and the 300 MVA level.

Natural ester insulating liquids interact with cellulose resulting in several utilities increasing the temperature rise limits of their transformers. Reducing the paper degradation rate for the same temperature has a very positive financial effect on asset depreciation and net present value. In addition, it has been instrumental in equipment cost reductions, size and material reductions, and improved thermal capability of electrical power equipment.

This has ultimately lead to significant numbers of natural ester filled transformers and reactors being used around the world today. Natural ester liquids are a very robust and reliable solution as an improved liquid insulation for transformers and other devices.

What to Use if FR3 Fluid Spills

With this new improvement, however, accidents might occur. Worry no more because S-34 is the perfect solution!

S-34 aqueous cleaner is most effective on fresh spills and drips. If it is not fresh, a thin film of Envirotemp FR3 Fluid will polymerize over time making it increasingly more difficult to clean. The extent of polymerization depends on air exposure time, temperature, and UV or sunlight.

For example, the extent of polymerization of a thin film of Envirotemp FR3 fluid after 1 day at 100°F in air is minimal, while after 7 days it would be polymerized and tacky to the touch. Exposure of a thin film of Envirotemp FR3 fluid to 200°F in air for 5 days would result in polymerization to a dry state.

For Envirotemp FR3 fluid that is partially polymerized, follow these instructions:

  • Apply S-34 cleaner with a pump spray
  • Allow a 15 minute soak time at 70°F
  • Hand wipe with a clean cloth using moderate rubbing
  • Multiple applications may be necessary

Note: Scraping, vigorous scrubbing, light sanding, or a paint touch-up may be required if polymerized to a semi-hard or hard consistency. Use shorter soak time at higher temperatures and longer soak time at lower temperatures.

Reporting Spills

For environmental spills, reporting would typically be the same as a conventional mineral oil spill. Waterway spills will likely be subject to US Environmental Protection Agency SPCC rules, but soil spills will likely be subject to state regulations, typically on a case-by-case basis. FR3 fluid has a high biodegradability, so it is not likely that soil dig up would be required.
